Final Cut Pro Guerilla Tips #3 – Avoiding Gotchas

1. Easy Setup - When you use an easy setup (Final Cut Pro>Easy Setup), this creates a new sequence, but it doesn’t effect already existing sequences. To change an existing sequence select it in the timeline and  go to Sequence>Settings.

Read the details here. http://documentation.apple.com/en/finalcutpro/usermanual/index.html#chapter=112%26section=2%26tasks=true

2. Matching Clips to the Sequence Settings. – You have an empty sequence and you drag a clip into the timeline.
A dialogue box will pop-up asking if you want to match the settings of the clip to the sequence.
If you say “Yes, the clip is conformed to the sequence settings. This ONLY happens for the first clip you put in the Sequence.

3. Targeting – Track Targeting is the relationship between a clip in the viewer and the sequence.
If the clip in the viewer has video and 2 audio tracks, then Video 1 & Audio 1 & 2 are targeted in the sequence.
The key to remember is that the tracks targeted in the sequence are determined by the clip in the viewer.

4. Auto Select confuses a lot of people, but is useful for copying or deleting clips/parts of clips in the timeline.
Auto-Select by default is selected on all tracks. So if you copy a clip from track 1
and then move your playhead to copy the clip, it is also pasted to track 1.
If you want to Paste the clip to a different track (say track 3), Option click on track 3 which will turn off Auto-Select for the other tracks, and then paste your clip.

5. Linked Selection – I avoid this like the plague. The problem is that it breaks the connection between linked video & audio, but the video and audio are still underlined in the timeline (which is a visual indicator that they are linked).
So you click on the video and move it, only the video moves and your clips are out of sync. If you want to trim the video separately, hold down Option before you click on the track, and you can trim the length without losing sync. When you let go of Option the Video and Audio are linked. Linked Selection is a default button in the timeline. I select it and drag it off, but make sure the button is green when you drag it off.
